Veliky Novgorod (until 1999, the official name - Novgorod) - a town in the northwest of Russia, the administrative center of the Novgorod Region, City of Military Glory.
Veliky Novgorod - one of the oldest and most famous cities of Russia (in 2009 officially celebrated 1150th birthday). This is a place of calling Rurik and origin of the Russian statehood. In the Middle Ages it was the center of Novgorodian Rus and then the Novgorodian land. The period of political history of Novgorod from 1136 and a sharp limiting the role of the prince till victory of the Prince of Moscow Ivan III over the Novgorod in 1478 is called "The Novgorod Republic" (in historical time it was called Lord Novgorod the Great).
Veliky Novgorod is called the "Father of Russian cities", as opposed to the name of the chronicles of Kiev as "Mother of Russian cities" proclaimed by Prince Oleg after the city's capture and murder of Askold and Dir.
Novgorod was not subjected to the Tatar-Mongol invasion , while paying tribute to maintaining the unique monuments of ancient Russian architecture of the pre-Mongol period, and was the only one of the oldest Russian cities, to avoid the decline and fragmentation in the XI-XII centuries. In 1136 it became the first free-style republic on the territory of the feudal Russia.
The population of Novgorod is 218,724 people (according to the 2010 census, 85 th place in Russia). Climate is moderate continental (close to the sea type).
